Whether musicians realize it or not, the pythagorean comma is an insidious small thorn in their side that they can't throw. It, and how it has been dealt with has had far further reaching ramifications than you could possibly imagine, albeit apparently very subtle ones.
The Pythagorean Comma
Thy Pythagorean Comma is the error in a scale between the "law of octaves" and successive applications of the perfect fifth, or 3/2 harmonic.
Unlike most any other scale we are aware of, the Perfect Fifths Musical Scale does not correct for the Pythagorean Comma, making octaves of a certain note someone disharmonious. Instead the Perfect Fifths Scale has perfectly harmonious perfect fifths.
In the western equal tempered scale, the Pythagorean comma is split up between all twelve notes, making it essentially unnoticeable to anyone but especially acute musicians. In this scale, the Pythagorean comma is wholly uncorrected, making it sound disharmonious, even to the untrained ear. This, explains why we believe many musicians would find it more difficult to play.
